Ancient Greeces (8BC -6AD) take on chair placement and the people who sat in them were a great deal different than the civilization before them. The concept of lesser citizens sitting on the floor or stools was entirely the same. Greek culture thought of placing extra chairs in various temples in order for the gods to make their direct presence known to the land. Advance time thousands of years forward to modern day living this would be like another occasional piece of furniture that does not always get used day in and day out. If the gods truly sat in these extra chairs one would think it would not be a daily occurrence.
For centuries the armchair represented status in society and now is commonly seen, accompanied by an ottoman, in living rooms around the world. Individuals of great power and authority sat in these chairs giving them complete control over their people. During the period of 6000BC, which dates back to ancient Egypt, ancient chairs were created out of lavish materials. Gold, silver, bronze and an array of jewels were etched or carved into these seats. Many of these chairs were decorated with such distinct qualities only the Pharaoh was deemed worthy enough to sit in one.
Living room chairs should also fit-in well with the overall "feel" of the house. Furniture, including chairs should also respect the space constraints in a room, both in number and size. For example, an over-sized couch or chair in a relatively small room could overwhelm the whole space and send out inadvertent "status" vibes in terms of who sits where. Low level chairs with low backs are useful for children and lend a "casual" feel to the room.
Although natural brown leather has a very authentic look, you might find that you prefer one of the brighter dyed shades. Its also important to remember that leather is one material that gets better with time. It will get just a bit softer and more comfortable each time you sit in it, adding to the chairs comfort and good looks. Leather is also a material that can be cleaned when necessary, which will help to contribute to the longevity of the chair.
