For centuries the armchair represented status in society and now is commonly seen, accompanied by an ottoman, in living rooms around the world. Individuals of great power and authority sat in these chairs giving them complete control over their people. During the period of 6000BC, which dates back to ancient Egypt, ancient chairs were created out of lavish materials. Gold, silver, bronze and an array of jewels were etched or carved into these seats. Many of these chairs were decorated with such distinct qualities only the Pharaoh was deemed worthy enough to sit in one.
Living room chairs are like seasoning in a dish - too little and you do not perceive the flavor; too much and you cannot taste the dish. Too few chairs and your living room looks sparse; too many and your living room looks cluttered.
When you look for any chair with moving parts, go to a showroom and try it out first. Does the mechanism move smoothly, without any grinding or bumps? How difficult is it to move? Be sure to sit in the chair the way you will at home. Check the comfort, the level of the headrest, and move the footrest and any other moveable parts. Since moving parts get more wear than the rest of the chair, you want to be sure they will hold up to use.
Recliner chairs that come with a separate ottoman are best used as design accents, alongside other living room furniture, given their unique look that sets it apart from plush sofas and armchairs. While you can choose to select one that matches the other sofas or loveseats, choosing a recliner that mildly contrasts with the other furniture can serve to turn the piece into the rooms focal point. For example, if your sofa set is all white, choose a recliner and ottoman done in a bright splash of color to make it stand out and draw guests eyes towards the space.
